Born to ...wait in line.

Am I the only person in the known universe who doesn't think that "Born to Run" is the greatest musical achievment since Beethoven's 9th Symphony? Don't get me wrong, I think Springsteen has done great stuff, especially as he got older, but that album never grabbed me. I disliked it thirty years ago in college, and it irritates me now. Yes, it's "great rock 'n' roll" but it's also kitschy, sentimental tripe.

Some would say, that's what rock is all about, but it wasn't what the Beatles were about, or The Stones, or Elvis Costello, or any number of others. Springsteen's musical myths about losers and wannabees who are "dying to get out" just hooks into a widely shared longing for...immature dreams of escape fueled by hi-octane chords. What's wrong with that? Nuthin' , but it's not anything to rave about for thirty years either.

I think of the critic who wrote in 1975, "Maybe we weren't born to run. Maybe we were born to queue up for Tickitron." That says it all. Pay your money for your dose of escapism and call it thrilling art. For me, dyspeptic iguana observer, it reminds me of one thing only, the Nuremburg rallies. Yes, too far, but still...
